Get to Know Twigs Home and Lighting
April 2021
If you’ve visited Canton First Monday Trade Days, it’s a sure bet that you’ve run across Twigs Home and Lighting. The Twigs bags are an almost ubiquitous site while walking the massive grounds. There will almost assuredly be a Twigs bag within eyesight no matter where you are. As far as First Monday vendors goes, Twigs is in the same league as First Monday itself: they are really, really big; huge even.

That’s a quote from their Facebook page. Twigs Home and Lighting can be found at the Creekside Shops and Row 46. They have the entire Creekside Shops building and 2 smaller buildings next to it for a total of 15,000 sq. ft. That is much larger than many full time retailers that are open 7 days a week in traditional shopping centers. That gives one an idea of the scale of their business, which is only open 4 days a month during First Monday weekends. They have even retrofitted the Creekside shops building with large display windows where they set up curated and themed rooms with items for sale that weekend. Even though they have a huge amount of space, leave your wheeled basket or shopping wagon outside as their isn’t much room inside for those.

Twigs Candles was their original name. Twigs got started in 1987 as a specialized fireless/flameless candle, lantern, and home lighting retailer. They still sell those, but have since started selling home décor and furniture as well. The category of the décor and furnishings could be described as farmhouse chic which naturally meshes with the Trade Days feel being in the small town of Canton in East Texas, but one can also find some clean minimalist style pieces as well. Tables, chairs, couches, cabinets, dressers, ceiling fans, and wall art are all to be found when shopping Twigs on Canton First Monday weekends. There really is something for just about everyone when it comes to decorating a home.

Tim and Jay are the proprietors of Twigs. It’s not uncommon to find much smaller vendors hire people to work and manage their First Monday booths/businesses. Don’t let the sheer size of Tim and Jay’s business fool you. They of course have people to assist shoppers, but they are also very hands-on and can be found onsite each First Monday weekend helping customers, talking to shoppers, and generally engaging with the people that have traveled to Canton to shop and enjoy First Monday Trade Days.
Seeing as how Trade Days is only 4 days a month, some might want to shop a bit more than that. Twigs has that covered as well. Their website offers a selection of just about everything one might buy in their store and it can all be ordered from the convenience of that couch which is about to be replaced. Some of the larger furniture items are available for pickup only. So, that couch may be around for a week or so more.
